Kimberly Reed transitioned long ago — leaving behind Paul McKerrow, the high school football star, and building a life as a filmmaker and magazine editor in New York.
Journeying back to Montana for her her high school reunion, Kim hopes to reunite with her adopted and deeply troubled brother Marc. The two were close at teenagers, but their post-adolescent lives have been rocked by profound changes. In addition to Kim’s transition, Marc had been gravely injured in a car accident, ushering an era of discord between the two.
The reunion proves surpisingly easy for Kim, who is welcomed warmly by friends and family alike, while Marc struggles to connect with once close friends and contain his jealousy.
With an intimate look at past grievances, dreams deferred and the challenges of adulthood for both revealed, the film becomes more about Marc and Kim’s sibling rivalry than about transitioning, reunions, or even filmmaking.
Prodigal Sons takes a mind-boggling twist when Marc, whose mental stability is growing increasingly uncertain, seeks out his birth parents and discovers that he is the only grandson of Orson Welles (with whom he bears an eerily close resemblance) and Rita Hayworth.
Dubbed "a brotherly rivalry between a man and a woman… and Orson Welles," Prodigal Sons is a transwoman’s attempted reconciliation with her estranged brother and her past. It also is a tale of an adopted son’s lifelong struggle with his identity and his surprising link to film legends. Not to be missed, this documentary proves to be a masterpiece study of sibling rivalry.
